Place-based learning experts First Hand are set to stage a 3-day event in Orkney, exploring how local communities are shaping low-carbon futures.
Working in partnership with Community Energy Scotland (CES) the field trip will run from Sunday 7 – Tuesday 9 September during the Orkney International Science Festival (OISF). First Hand will bring together people from across Orkney, the Science Festival, Scotland and the UK.
The programme includes visits to Burgar Hill (in partnership with CES and The Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) and Shapinsay (in partnership with CES and Shapinsay Development Trust) to learn directly from the skilled efforts of communities – past and present – in building a sustainable and resilient Orkney.
Neuroscience, psychology and science communication experts UCL Climate Action Unit will run a hands-on skills workshop and participants will also attend The Orkney Climate COP organised by OISF.
While Orkney is often seen as a showcase for renewables innovation, this event will shine a light on the lesser-known side: the collaborations, practical know-how and long-term, persistent work of local people.
First Hand is inviting local sustainability professionals, community groups, businesses, and education networks to participate in the field trip. The aim is to share learnings across sectors and across islands about how creative and collaborative skills can be developed to respond to complex challenges, like climate change.
The field trip is a collaboration between First Hand, Community Energy Scotland and UCL Climate Action Unit.
Bookings are now open, with tiered ticketing available:
- £95 – For Orcadians, students and independents
- £195 – For NGOs, charities and institutions based off-island
- £295 – For off-island commercial organisations
Tickets include:
- Access to all events as detailed in the field trip programme
- Travel around Orkney as part of the field trip
- A ferry crossing to the island of Shapinsay
Travel to Orkney and accommodation are not included.
