Watch: Take a minute – The Old Coffin Road

In a series of videos created by The Clydesider, Paul Murdoch retraces the root which coffins had to be carried for burial.

Clydesider as we explore the old Coffin Road that winds up and over the hill between Balloch and Helensburgh

Long ago, when someone passed away in the Vale of Leven, their relatives and friends had to carry their coffin over the hills from Balloch to Cardross for burial. This was a difficult and solemn journey, full of superstitions and traditions.

Paul Murdoch retraces this ancient route and reveals some of the stories and beliefs of the coffin bearers. Along the way, he also showcases some of the most stunning views that West Dunbartonshire has to offer, from Loch Lomond to the Clyde.
