The second “Join the Generations” football match took place between Oriam Walking Football Club (OWF) and Currie Football Club at the Currie Community Centre, on an early Sunday morning in December 2024.
The OWF “veterans” were all more than 70 years old—the Currie players were all around six! An addition for this year was the inclusion of a ladies’ team to play the Currie youngsters. Annie from OWF and the female coaches from Currie FC coaches bravely rose to the challenge.
As per last year’s inaugural event (covered in C&B News’ December 2023/January 2024 issue), this one was a roaring success. Many small sided games were played with loads of goals, passing, “nutmegs”*, banter, fun and laughter.
After many close matches the scores were tallied up and the youngsters ended up eventual winners. Their stamina and noise level far outweighed that of the elder statesmen. After the game all the players, coaches and parents got together for a cuppa, cake and a blether in the café at the centre. Delicious cakes were provided by Emma from Oriam Walking Football Club.
The donations from the sale of teas, coffees and cake raised more than £60 which all went towards OWF’s chosen charity, Alzheimer Scotland (AlzScot).
Paul Rendall and Gerry Butler, Chairs of OWF and Currie FC respectively, were delighted with the whole event and to be able to support a wonderful charity too.
“It is extremely rare to have an event where young and old can share such an enjoyable experience. We’re delighted to be able to be part of it,” said Gerry.
“There was a saying that life begins at forty. Well, events like this clearly show that sporting life can continue into your 70s and beyond,” said Paul.
Both clubs are already looking forward to next year’s rematch. The footballing partnership between the two clubs started in 2023 to show the continued benefits and attraction of playing football across the generations from grandchildren to grandparents.
*A “nutmeg” in football circles is when you kick, roll, or dribble the ball between an opponent’s feet/legs.
