On the weekend of the 4th and 5th of November, as the fireworks flew overhead, the Northern Invasion returned to Orkney.
No, it wasn’t a Viking arrival, but the a table top gaming event which has been running for over eight years.
The yearly event which had attracted people from Orkney, Shetland and sometimes other northern regions had been on hiatus due to Covid, but this year saw its return.
Travel for the Shetland contingent was courtesy of Northlink Ferries. The event ran for two days, on the 4th and 5th November, and was located at the Peedie Kirk in Kirkwall.
A Warhammer 40k tournament was held which filled many tables and saw such large clashes as Angron taking on a Warhound titan. In the end, the tournament winner was Neil Pearson from Shetland with his World Eater army. Tallying up the points players from Shetland came ahead of those from Orkney.
But it wasn’t just Warhammer 40k, as multiple Magic the Gathering games were played including several booster drafts. Also, multiple board games such as Hero Quest were played which saw the return of the crazy murderer Hobo that people thought was a wizard but had a strange fixation of killing goblins.
