Kendoon’s lifesaving solar solution

The small hamlet of Kendoon overcame challenges in installing a defibrillator, with power supply issues proving more difficult than fundraising. Now, with community support and a solar-powered solution, they have a state-of-the-art device in place.

With only a small number of permanent residents, the tiny hamlet of Kendoon is one of the more isolated rural communities within the Glenkens.

In June last year, residents started the long journey of sourcing funding for a defibrillator. Raising funds to purchase this lifesaving equipment turned out to be the easier part of the process; the difficulty lay with the power supply required to maintain the defibrillator batteries and temperature control unit.

Due to the rural location, the work involved in taking power from existing outlets was estimated at around £17,000. Therefore, alternatives had to be looked at.

With the help of various parties and the support of SP Energy Networks, Kendoon now has a fully-funded top-of-the-range defibrillator in a solar-powered box (one of only a handful currently in use in Scotland).
